I read a book once and one sentence that stood out in my mind was, "the purpose of study is not with acquisition of knowledge but with action and practice".
I think children should not simply master an environmental problem as knowledge but should realize the importance of participating in an environmental problem.
As time passes, children may forget what they have learned about the environment as knowledge.
If children have a strong interest against environmental problems, they can achieve big success by actually participating continuously.
I wonder how many children in Miyako Island know that the Miyakojima city is recognized as the "Model City for Environment" of Japan.
How about practicing children's environmental education in the order of the following? |
| 1. |
Make sure children know that Miyaojima city is a "Model City for Environment." |
| 2. |
Let children think what kind of city a "Model City for Environment" is. |
| 3. |
Let children examine what kind of problems they have as a"Model City for Environment ", and what needs to be done to maintain the status. |
| 4. |
Let children think of what they can do. Let them think of the meaning of participation and solutions for problems. |
| 5. |
Discuss how to practice solutions once they are made. Let children recognize the importance of routinization. |
When thinking of the theme of a "Model City for Environment", I think a waste problem is the most familiar and easy to start with.
For example: |
| 1. |
Garbage found in streets and parks in the neighborhood. |
| 2. |
Problem of the drifting-ashore garbage washed to seashore. |
I think that broad age groups from a small child to a high school student can participate in the waste problem.
First, small children to elementary school children can examine the problem of a certain garbage nearby. |
Junior to high school students examine the problem of drifting-ashore garbage.
For drifting-ashore garbage, they should perform new subjects of research, such as unique ideas of making data, reuse method, the processing method, or a drifting-ashore garbage art continuously. It could effect whole regional environmental management.
I like to see who and how we could make such a system and carry on.
