Protect Coral Reefs |
 |
 |
Bleached corals are washed ashore to Miyako Island.
Corals are very delicate creatures and when ocean temperature rises and reachs a certain level, the stress of corals increase, resulting in a loss of a symbiosis mechanizm. |

Besides natural phenomenon such as storm, typhoon and global warming, there are many man-made factors such as agricultural chemicals, chemical fertilizers and red clay caused by development projects which affect coral breaching.
We would like to find a way to stop the out flow of those human-caused factors. (Oshiro 9/20/2009) |

The old method to prevent red-clay was to build concrete walls along the coastline. But the concrete walls divided the land and the coastline completely, effecting the ecosystem and spoiling fine sights greatly as well. I hope unlike the concrete walls, there would be an alternative method such as a soft net-like material that can still prevent red-clay from flowing into the ocean. This option would not effect the ecosystem, and land crabs and other animals would be able to go between land and coastline freely. Please send your ideas. (Oshiro 9/25/2009) |

Although I don't have a solution, I think finding the new method that wouldn't divide the land and the coastline by concrete walls is a very impressive idea. Aren't there any examples overseas? (Y.U 10/25/2009) |

Most of the shore protection projects are carried out to stimulate the economy or the unemployment policy for local people. So, contractors would concentrate more on finishing the job as soon as possible to receive their payment.
I don't want to debate the rights and wrongs of such a system here but would like to look for a solution that would successfully prevent the flow of red clay, dirty water and trash from the drainage directly into the ocean.
My idea is to implement a construction method that uses natural resources that are currently being developed in the industry. It looks natural and can prevent the actual flow as well. The artificial stones called "Nomen stone" looks so natural that it covers all the artificial image from construction objects.
I think stacking Nomen stone is very effective but this method would take more time, money, and laborers.
For public construction jobs, we need to look for new technology, methods, and ways of minimizing the budget from tax money by building a committee of citizens, contractors, and the local administration.
Unlike old public construction jobs, we shouldn't let contractors begin at once when the budget comes in, but proceed steadily by following the priorities of long term projections.

"The construction method to keep a natural appearance" proposed in 003 is technically still in a developmental stage and needs to improve as you can see on web site.
In Japan, many products using bricks, concrete and engineering-work materials are experimentally manufactured by construction companies. However, more improvement should be made qualitywise and coastwise.
I hope that more suggestions and proposals would be sent in this cluster by professional engineers and the construction industries. (Mine 10/25/2009) |
