env-4 Develop Green Energy System
The electricity of most small islands rely on diesel engine generators.
Miyako Island is currently running test installations on wind mill generators and solar panel generators.
However, many islands need generation systems that are less costly yet durable.
This cluster is to collect the most recent and advanced technologies to install into small islands.

Fossil fuel may not exist in the next century. However, small remote islands have rich resources such as sunlight, wind, ocean wave, and plant ethanol made from sugarcane. The only problem is cost efficiency and this may need a few more decades to solve this matter by engineering innovation.
Our task in this cluster is to implement solar or wind generators to individual homes at a very low cost.

The development of green energy is one field that the world of new technology is putting effort into research. Currently, many believe that the introduction of new institutions for generating systems is not right since there are still many different opinions and ideas concerning development. It is best not to rush into the creation of institutions when there are no solid solutions. Micro power generators, though small in scale, are efficient, using water, sun, or wind. This could be the most promising for Miyako Island and other remote islands with small populations.
We would like to introduce the latest information as possible. So please send us your opinions and information as well. (Oshiro 9/20/2009)

I look at the picture in this cluster and think that it is a very regrettable scenery. Those wind generators do not match the beautiful island. The presence of those wind generators is too much and is spoiling the island's scenery. Would there be more wind generators built, if there is a budget? I have another question. Is it possible that more wind generators can be built without any problem if landowners give their consent?
I think opinions from citizens should be heard and also there should be preventions to stop the spoil of natural scenery is important for the concept of green energy. I would like to look for good ideas to solve those problems

I prefer solar heat and current power generators rather than wind power. Miyako Island and other small islands should put the power generator near a tidal current in higher priority since the sea is around. The benefit of current power generator is that there is no damage to the islands' scenery. Since current power generator do not spoil the island's scenery like wind power generators and solar panels, it will keep the beautiful island's image as a tourist destination.
The current power generator is still in the process of development, so it is not in the stage to introduce immediately.
It is worth collecting information continuously on companies such as the OpenHydro Group in Ireland, and though there is room for cost improvement, those generators reach a practical use technically and is very promising for the future. (Uehara 11/01/2009)

We should discuss micro power generators for Miyako Island and other remote islands only, not for other regions. Looking at examples of eco-associated businesses, the industrial world and central administrations have promoted eco-associated businesses or eco-related products for new economical promotions. Not only Japan, but other major production companies of wind power generators such as VESTAS in Denmark, Garmesa in Spain, GE in America and Suzion in India provide the most information to investors and security market.
It seems like green energies are not developed for those beneficiaries who hope to receive stable environmentally friendly energy at a low price.
How about giving this cluster the database or portal functions of micro power generators? (Uehara 11/02/2009)
