Increase the Recycle Rate Within the Island |
 |
 |
| How to increase the recycle rate within the island is always the issue of a century for small islands. Rubber tires, glasses and old building debris have already been used, but needs to change to other materials which can be recyclable within islands. |

Successful recycling projects in small remote islands accounts for how many percent of trash can be reused within an island. Shipping recycled items outside an island are greatly influenced by the marketing price in international scale. Those recycled materials such as plastic bottles, magazines and news papers always intensify price-cutting competition. Recycling dealers in the mainland will not show any interest in those " extra shipping cost" recycling products.
We need to develop new recycling system within the island for each categorized trash. |

It seems that a number of people who use my bag (eco bag) are recently increasing on Miyako Island.
In spite of beginning the use of eco bags since last year, I sometimes forget to bring eco bags when I go shopping or I just forget them in the car. Though I'm trying to use eco bags on a daily basis, I 'm not able to carry it out 100% yet. I think it will take a while to get used to using eco bags.
I have an idea that may rise the motivation of people and increase the diffusion rate of eco bags. Why don't we make it an event such as "Challenge to Guinness Book of Records " so that whole island would voluntarily participate and enjoy using eco bags at the same time. (Sawa 10/23/2009) |

As a tourist campaign, " Let's go to Miyako Island with your eco bag" or " Enjoy shopping with Miyako Island's original eco bags", we encourage tourists to use eco bags in Miyako Island.
It is also good to get an airline involved in the eco bag campaign so that they can sell Miyako Island's original eco bags to tourists in planes.
It could become a big eco bag campaign starting from Miyako Island extending to all regions in Japan.
I think people in Miyako Island can participate in environmental problems so they can appeal not only to Japan but to other countries that Miyako Island is handling the environmental problem positively. (Sawa 10/23/2009) |

I was interested in what happened to the recycling of egg containers so I looked for information and found out these surprising results.
According to data, about 2 billion egg containers are consumed yearly in Japan.
Although eggs are food with a high amount of consumption, usage of 2 billion egg containers in Japan itself is a shocking number ! The A-PET resin currently used for the egg containers consists of three elements of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen, same as the elements in trees or paper.
It is explained that it only becomes carbon dioxide and water when it is burned so that A-PET is not only highly transparent and strong against a shock, but also the most eco friendly substance in plastic. I don't know the number of collection and recycling rate of egg containers, but a large number of egg containers must be wasted in trash. Even though A-PET does not produce pollution when it burns, it would affect remarkable loss of resources and energy.
I came to an idea of using "my egg pack" as the same concept of eco bag. My egg pack should be washable, recyclable, and possible permanent to use. We need a cooperation from each retail store to set "self egg cramming corner" at one corner of a store. Customers pick their own eggs from the egg tray and put them in their own egg packs. You can pay for the number of eggs and the size of the eggs at the registration.
I think the usage of "egg pack" would help save our limited resources and energy. I would name the egg-recycle- pack as "EGGLEPACK©" because it is a concept of recycling egg containers. (Sawa 2009/10/23) |
